In multiplane storefront systems, the terms inboard (I), outboard (O) and center-set describe the positioning of glass or panels within the aluminum framing or mullion. A choice of these three multiplane positions is offered for all of 14000 Series Multiple Plane Storefront. Understanding these terms is important for not only for creating the correct appearance, but also for meeting performance requirements.

Inboard

In an inboard configuration, the glass is positioned towards the interior, room-side of the frame or mullion. Viewed from the exterior, the framing is prioritized to produce a layered, dimensional look that shadows the recessed, inset glass or panel. This placement also can provide added protection from exterior elements, which can enhance durability and reduce exposure to weather. It may be specified to support improved thermal performance by allowing space for external insulation.

Outboard

In an outboard configuration, the glass or infill panel is positioned closer to the exterior face of the frame. This arrangement emphasizes the glass and minimizes the visible frame, creating a sleek, modern aesthetic, often used in contemporary designs. It also mimics the look of curtainwall which delivers a consistent appearance for buildings that feature both curtainwall and storefront systems. Given the infill surface’s exposure, additional considerations may be necessary for areas with high traffic and challenging climates.

Center-Set

In a center-set configuration, the glass or panel insert is placed approximately in the middle of the frame or mullion. This position provides a balanced aesthetic with equal visibility of the glass and frame on both the exterior and interior. It offers a compromise between inboard and outboard systems, delivering a symmetrical look while maintaining weather resistance and thermal efficiency. This setup is commonly used when uniformity and balanced exposure are design priorities.
